7 Bays of Huatulco Tour
San Agustinillo is a small, picturesque beach tucked between the more famous Mazunte and Zipolite, about 65 kilometers south of Puerto Escondido. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm — this is one of the most relaxed and beautiful spots on the entire Oaxacan coast. The beach is sheltered by rocky outcrops on both sides, creating a protected cove with relatively calm water — much calmer than the open beaches of Puerto Escondido. The sandy beach is backed by palm trees and a handful of casual palapa restaurants and boutique accommodations. San Agustinillo has a distinctly bohemian and intimate atmosphere. The community is small — just a few hundred residents — and the tourism infrastructure is deliberately low-key. There are no nightclubs, no resort chains, and no traffic noise. Just the sound of waves, birdsong, and the occasional acoustic guitar from a beachfront café. The eastern end of the beach has the calmest water, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The western end, closer to Mazunte, has slightly more wave action and is popular with bodyboarders. Sea turtles are often spotted in the waters offshore. Several excellent small restaurants serve fresh seafood — grilled fish, ceviche, and seafood cocktails at very reasonable prices. A few yoga retreats and small eco-hotels operate here, attracting visitors looking for a genuine escape from modern life. San Agustinillo is often visited as part of a day trip from Puerto Escondido that includes Mazunte (for Punta Cometa sunset) and Zipolite. However, many travelers who discover this beach choose to extend their stay — it has a way of slowing you down and making you forget your plans.
