As the morning sun lights up the mangrove canopy, a massive American crocodile slides off the bank and disappears into the murky water just metres from your boat. Welcome to Ventanilla Lagoon โ€” one of the healthiest mangrove ecosystems on the Oaxacan coast, and home to the crocodile watching tour from Puerto Escondido that gets you face-to-face with wild reptiles in their natural habitat.

Your experience

What to Expect

Ventanilla is a small coastal village about 45 minutes south of Puerto Escondido, built around a protected mangrove lagoon managed by the local community. The lagoon is home to American crocodiles, iguanas, turtles, and over a hundred species of birds โ€” all thriving thanks to years of dedicated conservation efforts.

We pick you up at 8:00 AM and drive south along the coast. On arrival, you begin with a guided jungle walk through the conservation area where you'll see young crocodiles, iguanas, parrots, and snakes up close. Then you board an eco-friendly hand-paddled boat and glide through the mangrove channels, observing wild crocodiles basking on the banks and diverse bird species in the canopy above. The morning wraps up with a visit to the magnetic sand beaches of Ventanilla โ€” a unique natural phenomenon you won't find anywhere else.

What travelers are saying

โ€œTook a small boat up into the mangroves around La Ventanilla and saw multiple crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks. Our guide was a local biologist and explained everything about the ecosystem. Also saw tons of birds and even some iguanas. Totally safe and really cool.โ€

โ€œSo much more than just seeing crocodiles. The mangrove tour is beautiful in itself, and our guide clearly cared about conservation. We saw 4 or 5 crocodiles at close range (from the safety of the boat), plus herons, kingfishers, and a baby iguana. Recommended.โ€
