Dramatic sunset from Punta Cometa overlooking the Pacific Ocean
location_on Destinations

The southernmost point on the Oaxacan coast and one of Mexico's most spectacular sunset viewpoints.

Punta Cometa

Punta Cometa is a rocky headland jutting into the Pacific Ocean near the village of Mazunte, about 70 kilometers south of Puerto Escondido. It is widely considered one of the most breathtaking sunset viewpoints in all of Mexico — and possibly the world. The hike to the point takes approximately 20 minutes from Mazunte village center, following a well-marked trail through tropical vegetation. As you emerge onto the rocky clifftop, you're rewarded with a nearly 270-degree panorama of the Pacific Ocean, with waves crashing against the rocks far below. What makes Punta Cometa truly special is the energy of the place. Locals say it sits on a powerful ley line, and the combination of crashing waves, ancient rock, and limitless horizon creates a meditative atmosphere that draws yoga practitioners, meditators, and spiritual seekers from around the world. The sunset here is legendary. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to secure a spot — the point fills up as the golden hour approaches. On clear evenings, the sky transforms through every shade of gold, pink, orange, and purple before the sun dips into the Pacific. Many visitors describe it as a life-changing moment. During whale season (November to March), Punta Cometa is also an excellent land-based whale watching spot. Humpback whales can often be seen breaching offshore, and dolphins are frequent visitors year-round. The hike is easy to moderate and suitable for most fitness levels, though the final section involves some rocky scrambling. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and don't forget your camera. There are no facilities at the point itself. Punta Cometa is best combined with a day trip to Mazunte and Zipolite from Puerto Escondido. The drive takes about one hour, and many travelers visit all three locations in a single day.

Best Time to Visit

Arrive at least 30 minutes before sunset for the best experience. The dry season (November–May) offers the clearest skies. During whale season (November–March), you can spot humpback whales from the clifftop — bring binoculars.

How to Get There

From Puerto Escondido, take a colectivo or private transfer to Mazunte (about 1 hour). The trailhead is at the end of the main road in the village. The 20-minute hike is easy but wear proper shoes for the rocky final section.
