Bays of Huatulco

The Bays of Huatulco (Bahías de Huatulco) are a system of nine stunning bays and 36 beaches stretching along 35 kilometers of the Oaxacan Pacific coast, about 2 hours east of Puerto Escondido. This area is a designated National Park, and the marine ecosystem is among the best-preserved on Mexico's Pacific coast. Each bay has its own character. Bahía de Santa Cruz is the most developed, with a marina, restaurants, and water taxis. Bahía Chahué has the main tourist infrastructure. But the real magic lies in the more remote bays — Bahía de Cacaluta (featured in the Mexican film "Y Tu Mamá También"), Bahía de San Agustín (the best snorkeling), and Bahía de Órgano (pristine and secluded). The coral reefs of Huatulco are extraordinary. San Agustín Bay in particular has thriving coral gardens with visibility of 15 to 20 meters — exceptional for the Pacific coast. Tropical fish, rays, moray eels, sea turtles, and occasionally dolphins are all common sightings. The most popular way to experience the bays is by boat tour — the "7 Bays of Huatulco" tour departs from Santa Cruz marina and visits the most spectacular bays over a full day, with stops for swimming, snorkeling, and a beach lunch. This is one of the most popular day trips from Puerto Escondido. Huatulco also offers world-class scuba diving, zip-lining through the jungle canopy, river rafting, and excellent restaurants in the town of La Crucecita. The area has a more resort-style infrastructure than Puerto Escondido, with several international hotel chains. For travelers based in Puerto Escondido, a day trip to Huatulco combines beach time, snorkeling, and a completely different coastal landscape. The drive along the coast road is scenic, passing through small Oaxacan villages and coffee-growing mountains.

The 7 Bays Boat Tour

The classic Huatulco experience visits 7 of the 9 bays by boat. Swim in crystal-clear water, snorkel over coral reefs, walk on deserted beaches, and enjoy seafood lunch on the sand. The tour runs 6–7 hours.

From Puerto Escondido

Huatulco is about 2 hours east by car. Book a day trip tour with transport, or arrange a private transfer. Huatulco Airport (HUX) is also the closest international airport to Puerto Escondido.
