Playa Angelito, Oaxaca: A Local's Guide to Puerto Angelito in Puerto Escondido
Playa Angelito — better known locally as Puerto Angelito — is the calm, sheltered cove of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, where the open Pacific turns into something close to a swimming pool. Tucked between the town bay and Carrizalillo, it is the beach locals pick for a family day: clear water, gentle waves, snorkeling off the rocks and palapa restaurants a few steps from the sand. Here is everything you need to enjoy it.
Playa Angelito, Oaxaca at a Glance
Puerto Escondido is famous for the heavy surf of Zicatela, but its west side is a different world. Rocky points shelter a string of small bays, and Puerto Angelito is the most sheltered of them all. It is actually two little coves side by side: Angelito itself, and Playa Manzanillo just next door, separated by a low line of rocks. If you want the wider context of the town and its coastline, the Puerto Escondido entry on Wikipedia is a good primer.

How to Get to Puerto Angelito
The cove sits about two kilometers west of the Adoquín, in the neighborhood that also leads to Carrizalillo. You have three easy options:
- Taxi: the simplest choice. Ask for “Puerto Angelito”; drivers drop you at the top of the short path and steps down to the sand
- On foot: roughly 20–25 minutes from the center along the coastal road; bring water and go early, before the midday heat
- Boat taxi: local lancheros on Playa Principal run short trips along the coast to the cove — a fun way to arrive and to see the shoreline from the water
Coming back is just as easy: taxis wait or pass by regularly at the top of the access road. If you plan to combine coves in one day, getting to Playa Carrizalillo and its staircase is a short ride or walk further west.
Swimming and Snorkeling at Playa Angelito
This is the beach where Puerto Escondido slows down. The rocky arms of the cove break most of the swell before it arrives, so on a normal day the water is calm enough for a relaxed swim, floating with children, or trying a mask and snorkel for the first time. Visibility is usually best in the morning, before boats and swimmers stir up the sand.
What to Expect Underwater
- Reef fish around the rocks on both sides of the cove — angelfish, sergeant majors and colorful wrasses are common
- Gear rental on the beach, though bringing your own mask fits better and is more hygienic
- Clearest water in the dry season, roughly November to April
- Stay close to the rocks but not on them — sea urchins and sharp edges are common
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard to protect both your skin and the marine life
For the best fish and water conditions, a guided outing takes you to spots you cannot reach from the sand. Our snorkeling tour in Puerto Escondido includes the gear, the boat and a guide who knows where the fish are that day.
Tips for a Perfect Day at Puerto Angelito
Puerto Angelito is small, so it fills up on weekends and Mexican holidays. Plan around that and the day almost runs itself. When you want a change of scene, walk east toward town for the fishing boats of Playa Principal, or read our full guide to the Manzanillo and Puerto Angelito beaches.
- Arrive before 10 a.m. for the clearest water and a free spot in the shade
- Loungers and umbrellas are usually included when you order food or drinks at a palapa — ask before you sit down
- Try the fresh seafood: fish ceviche, shrimp cocktails and whole grilled fish are the local favorites
- Bring cash in small bills; many beach vendors and restaurants do not take cards
