What Kinds of Turtles Live in Puerto Escondido?

Puerto Escondido is home to several different types of turtles, but the main ones you’ll see here are the Olive Ridley Turtle, the Brown Turtle, the Hawksbill Sea Turtle, and the Leatherback Sea Turtle.

1. Olive Ridley Turtle (The Small Olive One)

The Olive Ridley Turtle is the littlest sea turtle and needs our help because it’s endangered. These guys can grow up to 70 centimeters long and weigh about 40 kilograms. They’re called “Olive Ridley” because they have an olive-colored shell.

What’s cool is that they lay their eggs in big groups, and thanks to some awesome people working hard to protect them, there are quite a few of them here in Puerto Escondido.

2. The Brown Turtle (The Algae Eater)

The Brown Turtle is also known as the “parlama turtle,” “torita turtle,” “sack turtle,” or simply the “black or brown turtle.” These turtles are a bit bigger than the Olive Ridley ones, weighing more than 120 kilograms and measuring about 1.2 meters long. They get their greenish color from munching on algae.

Just like all sea turtles, they play a big role in keeping our oceans healthy by taking care of reefs and other cool underwater homes.

3. The Hawksbill Sea Turtle (The Patterned Beauty)

The Hawksbill Sea Turtle is a pretty common sea turtle. They’re not too big, usually measuring between 60 and 90 centimeters, but they can get pretty heavy, over 120 kilograms. You can find them in tropical waters worldwide, including Puerto Escondido.

These turtles get their name from their beaks, which kinda look like a hawk’s beak. People used to hunt them for their beautiful patterned shells, but now we have turtle camps to protect them.

4. The Leatherback Sea Turtle (The Giant Softie)

The Leatherback Sea Turtle is the biggest of them all, reaching over 2 meters in length and weighing more than 600 kilograms. They’re called “leatherbacks” because their shells are much softer than other sea turtles.

These turtles are like super travelers. They can swim thousands of kilometers between their homes and where they find food, even in cold and rough seas. They have a super-efficient design!

Is it Ethical to Release Sea Turtles?

You see, the sea turtles are facing some big challenges because of rising temperatures and people who are up to no good (poachers).
