La Barra de Colotepec Beach

La Barra de Colotepec Beach

Perhaps one of the lesser known beaches in Puerto Escondido but one that is growing little by little and more and more people are deciding to settle in this area is Barra de Colotepec.

Located 6 kilometers from the center of Puerto Escondido, to the south is this paradise with an extensive beach and open sea. Its name is due to the mouth of the river that is there. The river meets the sea and creates an unusual landscape, beautiful to appreciate. In addition, as it is not one of the most touristy spots, it is ideal to get away from the noise of the center and give yourself a moment of quiet and solitude.

To access La Barra Beach, you can do it by car or take a public transport that leaves you on the road and from there walk about 15/20 minutes. Another option is to access through the beach of La Punta de Zicatela.

Surely you have already heard of the famous Punta de Zicatela, one of the busiest and most preferred spots by travelers and foreigners living in Puerto Escondido. On the left looking at the sea, where the lighthouse is located, you will see some cliffs and a rock path that makes its way through the sea. You can take that road to head towards La Barra. An important fact to keep in mind is that the path through the rocks can only be taken when the tide is low. When the tide is high, you will have to take the path that goes up the cliff. The complexity is moderate since you have to climb a few meters until you reach the top, cross the cliff and then descend on the other side of the rocks.

From there you continue walking between the rocks and you will reach the first end of La Barra. I’m sure the scenery will blow your mind. You will find a beach that your eyes cannot see where it ends, with an open and voluptuous sea and with little or no presence of tourists. It is really worth the excursion!

Keep in mind that there is no shade available so it is recommended to visit this beach at times tolerable to the sun or bring your own umbrella to cover yourself in the most dangerous hours.

Guess what? In addition to its desert character, on Sundays at 5 in the afternoon you can participate in the turtle release experience that takes place in the turtle camp that is located a few meters from the beginning of the beach. An unforgettable experience!

Another tip to offer you is to appreciate the sunset from the rock that is over the sea. If you look closely, you will be able to see the path marked to climb and enjoy the sunset from above, over the sea. Take your camera!

If you are looking for tranquility and escape a bit from the touristy, you already know how to visit La Barra de Colotepec Beach in Puerto Escondido.
