What to Expect
We pick you up at 5:00 PM from your hotel or Airbnb in Puerto Escondido for the 1-hour drive to Laguna de Manialtepec — one of the few places in the world where bioluminescence can be experienced. On arrival, your certified guide greets you with an educational briefing about the lagoon ecosystem and how the bioluminescent plankton create their magical glow through a chemical reaction involving luciferin and oxygen.
You board your private boat as darkness falls and cruise into the lagoon. As the sky turns from gold to deep violet, the water begins to glow. Your guide navigates to the brightest spots — every paddle stroke, every splash creates trails of electric blue-green light. You can put your hands in the water and watch light drip from your fingers, or swim in the bioluminescent water and become a glowing silhouette beneath the surface. The experience lasts approximately 1 hour on the water, and you return to Puerto Escondido by 9:00 PM.

Transportation is included;
we pick you up at 5:00 PM and drop you back by 9:00 PM — door to door from anywhere in Puerto Escondido. The drive to Laguna de Manialtepec takes approximately 1 hour each way.
$8,000 MXN for the entire private boat;
this is a private charter for up to 10 passengers — the price is per boat, not per person. Split between your group for excellent value.
Bioluminescence is brightest during the new moon;
the darker the sky, the more dramatic the glow. Full moon nights significantly reduce visibility. We recommend booking around the new moon for the best experience.
Primary season:
September to May; bioluminescence at Manialtepec is most reliable during these months. It can occasionally be visible outside this window depending on conditions.
Swimming is optional;
you can enjoy the bioluminescence from the boat by putting your hands in the water. Life jackets are provided for those who swim. Guides are certified and avoid crocodile nesting areas for safety.
Drinks and food are NOT included;
bring your own bottled water and any snacks you want for the evening.
Photography is challenging;
phone cameras cannot capture bioluminescence well. Focus on the experience rather than trying to get the perfect photo. A waterproof case is recommended to protect your phone.
Suitable for all ages and fitness levels;
this is a calm boat ride with optional swimming. Children are welcome. Cancellations with 24+ hours notice receive a full refund.
