Laguna de Manialtepec

The lagoon of Manialtepec offers a unique environment to enjoy some of the best sunsets, paddleboards, kayaks, and boat tours. You will be amazed by its marvelous landscapes and its bioluminescent plancton at night.

One of Mexico's Greatest Natural Wonders

The Manialtepec Lagoon is a pristine body of water where freshwater from the Sierra Madre meets the Pacific Ocean. The unique ecosystem supports incredible biodiversity: 200+ bird species, crocodiles, iguanas, and the famous bioluminescent dinoflagellates that make the water glow at night. The 15km mangrove forest surrounding the lagoon is one of the most important wetlands on the Oaxacan coast.

Experiences Not to Miss

The bioluminescence night tour (best May–January on moonless nights) is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. During the day, early morning bird watching tours reveal herons, egrets, kingfishers, pelicans, and sometimes roseate spoonbills. Kayaking through the mangrove tunnels offers a meditative, nature-immersive experience. The lagoon is just 18km from Puerto Escondido β€” an easy half-day or evening trip.
