Natural hot springs pools surrounded by tropical jungle at Agua Blanca
location_on Destinations

A hidden paradise of natural hot springs, waterfalls, and jungle pools in the mountains behind Puerto Escondido.

Agua Blanca

Agua Blanca is a small community nestled in the Sierra Madre mountains about 45 minutes north of Puerto Escondido, home to one of the region's most beautiful natural attractions: a system of cascading hot springs and freshwater pools hidden deep in the tropical jungle. The Agua Blanca hot springs are natural thermal pools where warm, mineral-rich water bubbles up from underground volcanic activity. The pools are arranged in a cascade down a jungle hillside, each at a slightly different temperature — from comfortably warm to delightfully hot. The surrounding jungle vegetation creates a natural canopy of shade, and the sound of flowing water and birdsong makes this one of the most peaceful places in Oaxaca. Getting to the hot springs is part of the adventure. The most popular route involves a scenic horseback ride through the jungle, crossing rivers and climbing into the foothills. The horseback riding tour to Agua Blanca is one of Puerto Escondido's most popular experiences — combining adventure, nature, and deep relaxation. For those who prefer to hike, a jungle trail leads to the springs in about 1.5 to 2 hours. The trail passes through lush tropical vegetation with opportunities to spot birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. The community of Agua Blanca also offers simple accommodations and a restaurant serving traditional Oaxacan food. Some visitors choose to spend the night to experience the springs at sunrise, when the mist rising from the warm water creates an ethereal atmosphere. Agua Blanca is best visited as a full-day or half-day excursion from Puerto Escondido. Book a guided horseback riding tour for the most complete experience, or arrange a private transfer and hike in independently.

The Hot Springs Experience

Thermal pools range from 30°C to 42°C. The mineral-rich water is said to have therapeutic properties. Soak in the hot pools, then cool off in the refreshing river below. The contrast is invigorating.

How to Visit

The most popular option is a horseback riding tour from Puerto Escondido (half-day, ~$2,500 MXN). You can also take a private transfer to the trailhead and hike in (1.5–2 hours). Bring swimsuit, towel, water shoes, and bug spray.
