Mexico City (CDMX) to Puerto Escondido: Flight vs Bus, Real Prices

Going from CDMX to Puerto Escondido, the direct flight wins on time (about 1 h 15 min in the air) and the overnight bus wins on price (roughly MXN 1,000–1,700 per seat for 13–17 hours). But ticket prices lie: once you add bags, airport taxis, food and lost beach time, the gap shrinks. Here is the real door-to-door cost from Mexico City to Puerto Escondido, the way a local would calculate it.

Flying From CDMX to Puerto Escondido: What It Really Costs

Direct flights leave the Benito Juárez airport (AICM) and land at Puerto Escondido (PXM) about 75 minutes later. Fares swing hard: a weekday seat bought a month ahead can be close to the bus price, while Easter, December and long weekends push it well past MXN 4,000. The ticket is only part of the bill:

  • Bags: basic fares often include only a small personal item; a carry-on or checked bag adds roughly MXN 400–1,000 each way.
  • Getting to AICM: an app taxi across the city costs MXN 150–400 and, at rush hour, more than an hour.
  • Airport to your hotel: PXM is close to town; plan MXN 200–400 for a taxi, or book a transfer in advance.
  • Buffer time: count two hours at the airport. Door to door, a 75-minute flight is still a half-day trip.

The Bus From CDMX to Puerto Escondido: Cheapest, but Long

First-class buses of the ADO network leave mostly in the afternoon and evening from the TAPO terminal (Metro San Lázaro), cross the mountains overnight and reach the coast in the morning. Expect 13 to 17 hours depending on the route and stops. Prices and timetables change by season, so check them on the official ADO website. What the bus gets right:

  • Luggage is included: one checked bag plus a carry-on, with no surprise fees.
  • It saves a hotel night: you sleep on board, which is worth MXN 800 or more in high season.
  • No airport transfers: TAPO is on the Metro, and the Puerto Escondido terminal is a short taxi from the beaches.
  • The catch: mountain curves, little sleep and a tired first day. Take motion-sickness tablets and a jacket.

The Math: Solo, Couple or Group?

Traveling solo on a budget: the bus is the clear winner, often less than half the real cost of flying. A couple on a 4-day trip: the flight usually wins, because the bus eats two of your four days and the hotel night you save does not make up for it.

A group of four: driving or a flight to Oaxaca plus a shared van gets cheap per head, and a private van from the airport carries everyone and the surfboards. The rule of thumb: if your trip is shorter than five days, pay for the flight; if you have a week or more and time is cheaper than money, take the bus and spend the savings on the coast.
