Bus from Puerto Escondido to Oaxaca: Schedules and Prices

Buses leave Puerto Escondido from the bus terminal and climb north into the mountains. You will typically find morning departures, which give you the views, and night departures, which save a hotel night but arrive in Oaxaca at dawn. Exact times shift with the season and the state of the road, which is why we do not print a fixed timetable here. Check live departures and fares on the official ADO website.

Price depends on the coach class, the day and how early you buy. In high season (December to April, Easter and the Mexican long weekends) the best seats go first. In rainy season (June to October) landslides can add hours, so never plan a same-day flight out of Oaxaca.

There are two ways over the mountains: the road through San José del Pacífico and Miahuatlán, and a shorter but twistier road through Sola de Vega. Which one your bus takes decides the hours, so ask when you book. For the exact kilometers see the distance from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido.

How to Buy Your Ticket and Where to Board

You have three simple options, and none requires a Mexican phone number.

  • Online: buy on the ADO website or app and pick your seat; keep the e-ticket on your phone.
  • At the terminal: the counters accept cash and cards; in high season buy a day ahead.
  • Through your hotel or agency: useful if you want help with seats and luggage.

From the beaches of Zicatela and La Punta the terminal is a short taxi ride. Arrive 30 minutes early with your ID. In Oaxaca you arrive at a terminal outside the historic center, so plan a taxi to your hotel. The same trip in the other direction is covered in our Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido bus guide.

Tips for the Ride

  • Take a jacket: the pass is cold while the coast is hot.
  • Take motion-sickness tablets before the first curves, and eat light.
  • Keep your passport, valuables and a charger in your hand luggage, not in the hold.
  • Download offline maps and tell your hotel in Oaxaca your arrival time.
  • Prefer a daytime departure when you can: you see the mountains and arrive in daylight.

Bus, Colectivo, Transfer or Flight?

The bus is the cheapest and a fine choice if you are not in a hurry. If you want fewer hours and a pickup at your door, a colectivo or a private transfer saves time and avoids the terminal.
