How the Shuttle Works Leaving Puerto Escondido

On the way up, the shuttle does its loop on the coast first. The driver collects passengers one by one in Zicatela, La Punta, Rinconada, Carrizalillo, Bacocho or the Adoquín, so the first pickup can come 30 to 45 minutes before the van actually leaves town. Have your bags at reception and your phone on: drivers message on WhatsApp when they are a few minutes away.

Most departures leave early, because the mountain road is safer and cooler in daylight. With the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla toll highway, open since 2024, a car does the climb in about 2.5–3.5 hours; shuttles that still use the old roads through Sola de Vega or San José del Pacífico take much longer. In Oaxaca, drop-offs usually cover the historic center, Jalatlaco, Reforma and the Oaxaca International Airport, which sits south of the city, right on the way in.

If you are catching a flight out of Oaxaca, do not plan it for the same afternoon on a shared shuttle. Rain from June to October can close a lane for hours. Take a private transfer with a big margin, or sleep a night in the city: it is worth it for the food alone.

Shared Shuttle or Private Transfer?

Both take you door to door. The difference is how many stops you make and who decides when you leave.

  • Shared shuttle: one or two fixed departures a day, the lowest price per seat, usually one suitcase and a carry-on; surfboards are often extra or refused.
  • Private transfer: you choose the pickup time, it goes straight to your address or the airport terminal, and you can stop for coffee or mezcal.
  • The group math: four people sharing a MXN 5,500 private transfer pay about MXN 1,375 each, close to a shared seat once you add board and luggage fees.

A private van makes sense with kids, boards, a flight to catch or anyone who gets carsick on the curves. Our private transfers from Puerto Escondido run the Oaxaca route with a bilingual driver, one price per vehicle and pickup at any address on the coast.

How to Book the Shuttle to Oaxaca (and What to Ask)

  • Book at least one day ahead, and a week ahead from December to April, at Easter and on Mexican long weekends.
  • Give your exact pickup address in Puerto Escondido with a map pin; many places in Zicatela have no street number.
  • Ask what time the first pickup is, not only the departure time, and which road the driver takes.
  • If you are going to the airport, give your flight time so the driver can plan the margin.
  • Pack a sweater and motion-sickness tablets within reach: the pass is cold and the curves are many.
