Door to Door Shuttle From Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido: Prices, Times and Booking

A door to door shuttle from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido picks you up at your hotel in Oaxaca City and drops you at your accommodation on the coast in about 4 to 7 hours. Shared shuttles cost roughly MXN 450–900 per person; a private door-to-door transfer starts at MXN 5,500 per vehicle. Book a day ahead, or a week ahead in high season.

How the Shuttle Works, From Pickup to Drop-Off

The driver collects you at your hotel or Airbnb in the historic center of Oaxaca, usually early in the morning, then picks up the other passengers on a short loop. On the coast he drops each person at their own door, whether that is Zicatela, La Punta, Rinconada or the center. That is the whole point: no bus terminal and no taxi at either end, with your bags in the same van the whole way.

Travel time depends on the road. Since February 2024 the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla toll highway has cut the drive to about 2.5–3.5 hours for a car, and many shuttles now use it. Others still take the old Federal Highway 131 via Sola de Vega, or Highway 175 through San José del Pacífico, which adds hours. For the kilometers of each route, see how many kilometers it is from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido.

Add 30 to 60 minutes for pickups and drop-offs on a shared run. In the rainy season (June to October) landslides can close a lane for hours, so never book a same-day flight out of Oaxaca or Puerto Escondido on the strength of a shuttle schedule.

Shared Shuttle or Private Transfer?

Both are door to door. The difference is who else is in the van and who sets the clock.

  • Shared shuttle: fixed departure times, the lowest price per seat, usually one suitcase plus a carry-on; surfboards are often extra or refused.
  • Private transfer: you choose the time and the stops (coffee in the mountains, a mezcal village), and the price is per vehicle, not per person.
  • The group math: four people sharing a MXN 5,500 private transfer pay about MXN 1,375 each, close to a shared seat once you add luggage fees.

Private wins with kids, boards, a late arrival in Oaxaca or anyone who gets carsick and needs to stop on demand. Our private transfers run the Oaxaca City route with a bilingual driver, one price per vehicle, and pick you up at any address.

How to Book a Door to Door Shuttle (and What to Ask)

  • Book at least one day ahead, and a week ahead from December to April, at Easter and on Mexican long weekends.
  • Send your exact pickup and drop-off addresses with a map pin, not just a hotel name.
  • Ask which road the driver takes: the toll highway saves hours.
  • Confirm the luggage limit and the surfboard policy in writing before you pay.
  • Pack a jacket and motion-sickness tablets: the pass is cold and the curves are many.

Going the Other Way, or Prefer the Bus?

The same service runs from Puerto Escondido back to Oaxaca, with early pickups on the coast. If budget comes first, the bus is cheaper but slower: read our Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido bus guide or the bus from Puerto Escondido to Oaxaca.
