How Many Kilometers From Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido? The 2026 Answer

From Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido it is about 190 kilometers (118 miles) by the new Barranca Larga–Ventanilla toll highway, a drive of 2.5 to 3.5 hours. The old free road, Federal Highway 131 via Sola de Vega, is about 250 km and takes 6 to 6.5 hours. In a straight line the two cities are only about 140 km apart.

How Many Kilometers Is Each Route From Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido?

The number you get depends entirely on the road you take. Since the toll highway opened on 4 February 2024, the shortest drive is no longer the old mountain road but a combination of three stretches. Here is how the roughly 190 km add up, from the Zócalo of Oaxaca to the center of Puerto Escondido:

  • Oaxaca City → Barranca Larga junction: ≈ 70 km on Federal Highway 175, through San Bartolo Coyotepec and Ocotlán; about one hour with town traffic and speed bumps.
  • Barranca Larga → Ventanilla: 104 km of four-lane toll highway through the Sierra Sur; about 1 to 1.25 hours at the 110 km/h limit on the faster sections.
  • Ventanilla → Puerto Escondido: ≈ 15 km west on coastal Highway 200 from Colotepec; 15 to 20 minutes.

Why the Kilometers Don't Tell the Whole Story

On the coast, 190 km would be a two-hour cruise. In Oaxaca it isn't, because the road climbs out of a valley at about 1,550 m, crosses ridges well above 2,000 m and drops to sea level. On the old Highway 131 the average speed is barely 40 km/h — that is why 250 km took more than six hours. The toll highway flattens that curve with tunnels and bridges, but the first 70 km out of the city are still ordinary two-lane road, and that stretch is where most of the time goes.

Kilometer by Kilometer: What You Pass on the Toll Route

Km 0–70: The Central Valleys

You leave Oaxaca heading south past the black-clay pottery workshops of San Bartolo Coyotepec and the market town of Ocotlán. Fill the tank here: it is the last easy stretch of gas stations before the coast.

Km 70–174: The Barranca Larga–Ventanilla Toll Highway

At the Barranca Larga junction you pay the first toll and join the 104 km highway. It is the fastest part of the trip, with few towns and long views over pine forest. Mobile signal is patchy, so download offline maps before you get here.

Km 174–190: Down to the Pacific

The highway ends at Ventanilla, in the municipality of Colotepec, where you pay the second toll and turn west on Highway 200. Fifteen minutes later you are in Puerto Escondido, with the heat and the surf noise to prove it.

Practical Tips for the 190 km

  • Budget for tolls: two booths at roughly $235–245 MXN each for a car in 2026, so about $470–490 MXN one way. Carry cash as a backup.
  • Check for roadworks: landslides in the 2025 and 2026 rainy seasons led to slope repairs, with alternating one-lane traffic reported between km 36 and 56 of the toll highway.
  • Drive in daylight: fog in the high sections and livestock on the free roads make night driving a bad idea.
  • Old road, new reason: Highway 131 via Sola de Vega is 60 km longer but free and beautiful; take it only if you have a whole day.
  • Don't want to drive? Shuttles and buses now use the toll road too; compare them in our guide to getting from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido.

The highway's official length is listed by the Oaxaca state government at 104.3 km, the figure used in every count above. For travel times by bus, van and plane, see our Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido distance and hours guide.
