Playa La Punta, Puerto Escondido: The Complete Guide to the Left Point and Its Barrio

Playa La Punta is the southern tip of Zicatela in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca: a sandy corner where the beach meets a rocky point and a long left-hand wave peels down the shore. It is the friendlier, more forgiving cousin of the Mexican Pipeline, with a laid-back barrio of cafés, hostels and mezcal bars behind the sand. This guide covers the surf, swimming, sunsets, food and how to get there.

Where Is Playa La Punta?

Walk south along Zicatela, past the heavy beach break that made Puerto Escondido famous, and the sand ends at a rocky headland. That last stretch, roughly three kilometers from the main Zicatela strip, is La Punta. The rocks bend the swell into a peeling left, and the neighborhood behind them, often called Brisas de Zicatela, grew up around the surfers who came for it.

Locals simply say "La Punta". It is a different world from the rest of Zicatela: sandy lanes instead of avenues, more bikes than cars, and a long list of smoothie shops, surf schools and small hotels. If you want the overview first, start with our La Punta destination page.

Surfing Playa La Punta

Who the Wave Is For

La Punta is a left-hand point break: the wave starts near the rocks and runs down the beach, giving long rides on good days. It is softer than the barrels of Zicatela, which makes it a magnet for intermediate surfers, longboarders and locals of every age. True beginners should take a lesson on a gentler beach first or come on small, clean days with an instructor.

Season, Tide and Crowds

The point lights up with the south swells of roughly April to October, and the best sessions are usually at dawn, before the afternoon onshore wind. On good days the lineup is packed, and the peak belongs to the regulars. Respect it and you will get your share of waves.

  • Don't drop in: the surfer closest to the peak has priority
  • Paddle out wide: use the channel, not the path of the riders
  • Know your limits: on big days the current along the point is strong
  • Watch the rocks: the inside near the headland gets shallow
  • Bring wax and sunscreen: the sun is brutal by mid-morning

Beyond the Surf: Swimming, Sunsets and the La Punta Scene

Can you swim at Playa La Punta? Only on calm days, close to shore and with care. This is the open Pacific: when the swell is up, waves dump hard and currents pull along the beach. Watch the water before you go in, never swim alone, and learn how rip currents work. For an easy swim, head to the sheltered bays on the other side of town instead.

Food, Brunch and Nightlife

The barrio is famous for its morning culture: acai bowls, specialty coffee and chilaquiles after the dawn session. Our guide to the best breakfast and brunch spots in La Punta has the favorites. At dusk the beach fills up for the sunset over the point, and later the bars and mezcalerías along the main lane take over.

Where to Stay Near La Punta

How to Get to Playa La Punta and Practical Tips

From the Adoquín in the town center, a taxi to La Punta takes about 10 to 15 minutes; agree on the fare before you get in. You can also walk the whole length of Zicatela on the sand in around 40 minutes, best done early or late to avoid the midday heat.

  • Cash is king: many small places prefer pesos, and ATMs nearby can run empty on weekends
  • Go early: dawn brings the best waves, the softest light and the fewest people
  • Protect your feet: the sand burns by noon and the rocks at the point are sharp
  • Stay hydrated: carry water; shade on the beach itself is limited
  • Leave no trace: take your trash with you and keep the beach clean

FAQ: Playa La Punta

Is Playa La Punta good for beginners?

It is the most accessible point wave in Puerto Escondido, but it is not a beginner beach. Advanced beginners can surf it on small days with an instructor; first-timers learn faster on gentle waves such as Playa Marinero.

What is the difference between Zicatela and La Punta?

Zicatela is the long beach with the powerful, barreling beach break; La Punta is its southern end, where the point creates a softer, longer left and a quieter, bohemian neighborhood.

When is the best time to visit Playa La Punta?

Surfers come from April to October for the south swells. For calmer water, fewer crowds and dry weather, November to March is ideal for beach days and sunsets.

Is La Punta safe?

It is a busy, sociable area full of travelers. Use normal precautions: don't leave belongings unattended on the sand, take a taxi late at night and never swim when the sea is rough.
