Die Geschichte von Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido — literally "Hidden Port" — was a small fishing village tucked between the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains and the Pacific Ocean until the 1960s. The town was essentially cut off from the rest of Mexico, reachable only by boat or mule trail through the mountains.

In the 1930s, the bay was used as a minor port for shipping coffee from the Oaxacan highlands. The construction of Highway 200 along the Pacific coast in the 1970s finally connected Puerto Escondido to the outside world, and surfers soon discovered the thundering waves of Playa Zicatela — one of the heaviest beach breaks on Earth.

By the 1980s, Puerto Escondido had become a cult surf destination, attracting wave riders from California, Australia, and Hawaii. The famous "Mexican Pipeline" put the town on the global surf map. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the town grew steadily while retaining its laid-back character — a rare feat for a Mexican beach destination.

Today, Puerto Escondido is Oaxaca's third-largest city with nearly 30,000 residents, yet it still feels like a small town. The arrival of direct flights from Mexico City, a growing digital nomad community, and international recognition as a world-class surf destination have made it one of Mexico's fastest-growing tourist towns — while preserving the authentic Oaxacan culture, indigenous traditions, and natural beauty that make it truly special.

Surfkultur & Wellen

Puerto Escondido is one of the world's premier surf destinations, famous for the thundering barrels of Playa Zicatela — known as the "Mexican Pipeline." This 3-kilometer stretch of beach produces some of the heaviest, fastest waves on Earth, drawing professional surfers from around the globe for competitions like the Puerto Escondido Challenge.

But Puerto Escondido isn't just for experts. La Punta offers a consistent, mellow point break perfect for intermediate surfers and longboarders. Playa Carrizalillo has gentle waves ideal for beginners, and Playa Marinero is popular with bodyboarders. Multiple surf schools offer private lessons for all levels — you can go from your first wave to carving turns in just a few days.

Surf season peaks from May to September when south swells bring the biggest waves to Zicatela. The rest of the year still sees consistent surf at La Punta and other breaks. The surf culture here is authentic and welcoming — far less crowded and commercialized than Bali, Hawaii, or even Sayulita.

Indigene Kultur & Oaxacanische Traditionen

Handwerkliche Mezcal-Destillerie in Oaxaca

Puerto Escondido sits within Mixtec and Chatino indigenous territory. Oaxaca is Mexico's most ethnically diverse state, home to 16 indigenous groups and more indigenous languages than any other region. Their influence is woven into every aspect of local life — from food and textiles to festivals and spiritual traditions.

The mezcal you'll drink here is distilled using ancestral techniques passed down through generations. The 7 moles of Oaxaca — complex sauces made from dozens of ingredients — are a culinary art form. Hand-woven textiles, black pottery from San Bartolo Coyotepec, and fantastical alebrijes wood carvings represent centuries of artistic tradition.

Major cultural events include Día de los Muertos (Oct 31–Nov 2), the Fiestas de Noviembre (a month-long cultural celebration), and the Guelaguetza dance festival. These celebrations offer a window into the deep spiritual and communal traditions of Oaxacan indigenous peoples.

shield Ist Puerto Escondido Sicher?

Puerto Escondido is considered one of the safest beach destinations in Oaxaca and Mexico. The town relies heavily on tourism and the local community is welcoming and friendly. Standard travel precautions apply: use hotel safes, avoid walking alone on unlit beaches at night, and secure your belongings.

Ocean safety is the biggest concern — Playa Zicatela has extremely powerful currents and waves. Never swim at Zicatela unless you are an advanced surfer. Stick to Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito, or Manzanillo for safe swimming. Always check flag warnings.

Health tips: Drink bottled water only (never tap water). Wear sunscreen — the tropical sun is intense. Bring insect repellent for evenings and jungle excursions. In case of emergency, dial 911.
