Puerto Escondido is close enough to Oaxaca’s Central Valleys that genuine hand-carved alebrijes, black clay barro negro pottery, and hand-woven wool rugs show up in local shops within days of being made. Look for a village of origin on the label — that’s the real marker of authenticity.

The town’s markets mix fresh produce, prepared food, and rotating craft stalls from small cooperatives — usually at better prices than boutique shops. Weekend tianguis (street markets) pop up in different neighborhoods and are worth timing your visit around.

As a world-class surf destination, Puerto Escondido has surf shops scattered across Zicatela and La Punta selling boards, wetsuits, and repair services. Snorkeling gear and skate shop staples are easy to find nearby too.

Puerto Escondido’s popularity with digital nomads and long-stay travelers has brought independent clothing brands selling linen, handmade jewelry, and breezy beach fashion — concentrated mostly in La Punta and along Zicatela’s main strip.
