What is Bioluminescence?
Before we dive into the details of bioluminescence in Puerto Escondido, let’s first understand what bioluminescence is. The Puerto Escondido Bioluminescent Lagoons
In Puerto Escondido, you can experience the mesmerizing bioluminescence in two primary locations: Laguna de Manialtepec and Chacahua. Both of these lagoons are home to bioluminescent dinoflagellates, a type of plankton that creates the stunning light displays.
Laguna de Manialtepec Bioluminescence
Laguna de Manialtepec is conveniently located just 20 minutes away from central Puerto Escondido. This lagoon offers an optimal location to experience bioluminescence, but it’s essential to visit during specific times of the year when the lagoon connects with the ocean, allowing the plankton to thrive. The best time for this experience is during the new moon phase, ensuring the darkest skies and the most vibrant bioluminescence.
Chacahua Bioluminescence Lagoon
Chacahua is a bit farther away, approximately 1.5 hours each way, but it offers a year-round bioluminescence experience. The difference here is that bioluminescence is present throughout the year, making it an excellent option regardless of when you visit Puerto Escondido. Tours to Chacahua usually start around 7 pm and return around 11 pm, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the enchanting glow.

When is the Best Time for Puerto Escondido Bioluminescence?
Now that you know where to experience bioluminescence in Puerto Escondido let’s talk about the best time to plan your visit. The Puerto Escondido bioluminescence season typically runs from September to May in the lagoon of Manialtepec. However, this breathtaking phenomenon can be witnessed all year round in Chacahua.
Several factors influence the intensity of bioluminescence, including water temperature, plankton presence, and moonlight. Bright moonlight can make it harder to see the bioluminescence, which is why tours provide tents to block out the moon’s light, ensuring you can fully enjoy the magical blue glow.
Safety and Wildlife in the Bioluminescent Lagoon
One question we often hear is, “Are there crocodiles in the bioluminescent lagoon?” The answer is yes, there are crocodiles in the lagoon as part of the natural ecosystem. However, rest assured that they are rarely interested in humans and prefer to avoid contact.
Certified tour operators ensure your safety by steering clear of crocodile nesting areas. Additionally, swimming in the bioluminescent waters is not compulsory, and the experience is equally enjoyable whether or not you choose to do so.
Moon Phases and Bioluminescence Visibility
Understanding moon phases can significantly impact your bioluminescence experience. The new moon phase offers the darkest skies, allowing bioluminescent organisms to shine more brightly. As the moon advances, its illuminated crescent adds ambient light, while the full moon can make bioluminescence challenging to observe.
During the waning phases of the moon, skies darken, potentially enhancing bioluminescence visibility. Specific organisms may sync their displays with moonlight, while others prefer darker nights, regardless of the moon phase.

Thanks @puerto_escondido_mx for this crazy experience !! I chose to opt for the morning bioluminescence at 5AM and it was great. After watching the stars in the middle of the lagoon, we went for a swim with the bioluminescent plankton, to finally enjoy one of the most beautiful sunrise I’ve ever seen. On our way back, we were able to see lots of birds and plants thanks to our amazing local guide. I absolutely recommend !
